Alternate Shot
Two players per team. Player A tees off, and Player B hits second shot and they continue alternating until the team holes out. If Player A makes the put, then Player B tees off on the next hole. Use an average of both handicaps for the net score.
Best Ball
Where each golfer plays his or her own ball from start to finish but the team score for each hole is determined by the best score of all the team members. The best scores are then totaled for the final 18 hole score. There can be two, three or four golfers on each team.
Fairways, Greens, Pars and Birdies
On Par 4 and Par 5 holes, the tee shot on the fairway counts as 1 point and a ball on the green in regulation counts as 1 point. On Par 3 holes, balls on the green in regulation count as 2 points. Pars count as 1 point and Birdies count as 2 points. Total points are counted toward prize money.
Flag Tournament
Use half your handicap plus 70. For example, if your handicap is 15, then half is 7 1/2, drop the 1/2 and add to 70 to get 77. Place your flag where you hit your 77th stroke. The person who gets farthest around the course wins.
Long Ranger
In Lone Ranger, two scores per hole are added together for the team score. One of these two scores must be from the Long Ranger. Player A is the Long Ranger on hole 1; Player B on hole 2 and so forth. So on each hole, the team score will be the score of the player designed the Long Ranger, plus the lowest score of the other players on the team.
Red, White, and Blue Alternate
Two-person teams. Play Red Tees, holes 1 thru 6, alternate shot; Play White Tees, holes 7 thru 12, Best Ball; Play Blue Tees, 13 thru 18, Scramble.
Scramble
In a scramble, each player tees off on each hole. The best of all tee shots is selected and all players play their second shot from that spot. The best second shot is determined, and all players play their third shots from that spot...and so on until the ball is holed. Other scramble variations can be played so check with the starter before your first hole.
